The nerves in your thumb are located in the soft tissue and bone structure of your thumb. They run through the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your thumb, allowing you to feel sensations and control movement in your thumb.
In the anatomical position of the hand the palm is facing forward. The thumb is placed in contact with the index finger. You can see the picture of the anatomical position. It is better to see than describe the same.
LIGAMENTS
Ligaments connect bone to bone. Tendons connect tissue to bone.
Tendons attach muscle to bone Ligaments attach bone to bone
There are four main ligaments in the thumb: the radial collateral ligament, ulnar collateral ligament, dorsal radial ligament, and palmar radial ligament. These ligaments provide stability to the thumb joints and allow for proper movement.
The nerves in your thumb are located in the soft tissue and bone structure of your thumb. They run through the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your thumb, allowing you to feel sensations and control movement in your thumb.
A hyperextended thumb occurs when the thumb is bent backwards beyond its normal range of motion. This can result in stretching or tearing of the ligaments supporting the thumb joint, causing pain, swelling, and instability in the thumb. Treatment may involve rest, ice, splinting, and physical therapy.
The thumb doesn't bend in certain situations because of the structure of the bones, ligaments, and tendons in the hand. These structures provide stability and limit the range of motion of the thumb to prevent injury.

There were a few that do not have a standard trigger, but use a THUMB trigger. Do a web IMAGE search for Winchester thumb trigger rifle, and you will find it.

The cracking and popping is probably gasses being releases from the synovial fluid in the thumb joint. this joint ids generally held together by ligament's. it sounds like there may be a problem with the ligaments ability to hold the joint in place properly. See a doctor about it.
Picture a left hand mitten, (shape of Michigan) it is at the base where the index finger and thumb join.
Ligaments connect bone to bone.
Ligaments are found at joints.
But ligaments are found in both. Bones are connected to bones with ligaments.
