Yes. As well, larger molecules, that are permitted entry into the Cell by other means, transport themselves throughout the Cytoplasm to numerous destinations including the Nucleus via, it would appear, diffusion.
There are 2 processes by whicha cell can get what it needs to live. These are 1) Active transport where the cell must expend some energy to move something into the cell (like food molecules) and out of the cell (like waste). The other 2) diffusion/osmosis. Diffusion is a process where things move from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration without expending any energy, like the smell of bacon cooking in a kitchen filling an entire house. Try dropping a drop of food coloring into a glass of water and, without stirring, check it a few hours later. Osmosis is the diffusion of water.
Put a sucrose solution into the visking tube and fasten the ends, then place it in water (at different temperatures). The varying temperatures would quicken or slow the rate of diffusion (osmosis). Then using iodine, you put some in the water that the visking tube was in and if it turns dark blue/black the more sucrose has diffused. This can be put into a calorimeter to check the intensity for different temps. Several factors influence cell diffusion. For example, the polarity of the molecule to be diffused and the size of the molecule. Both of these factors may determine whether or not diffusion will be passive or facilitated. The lipid bi-layer of the cell membrane favors lipid soluble molecules and will allow quick passive diffusion of these molecules.
