There's a great chapter on bryophyte decomposition (including Sphagnum) in Dr. Janice Glime's online Bryophyte Ecology textbook. Sphagnum does decompose, but quite slowly, and one of the reasons is that Sphagnum acidifies its environment. This limits the activity of decomposers.

in other words acid!

Why do only living things decompose?

Bacterias and some fungi do not decompose living organisms because the immune system of living organisms do not allow bacterias to decompose them. The immune system of living organisms fight against these bacterias. In the case the immune system of the living organism dying, the bacterias can easily harm them.

How does pH affect bacterial growth?

The pH level of the environment can affect bacterial growth. Bacteria have an optimal pH range in which they can thrive and reproduce. If the pH is too high or too low, it can disrupt the bacterial cell's internal environment and inhibit growth. This is because pH affects the structure and function of proteins and enzymes that are essential for bacterial metabolism.

What will most likely happen to an enzyme if it is placed in an environment that is too acidic or too basic?

If an enzyme is placed in an environment that is too acidic or too basic, its structure can be denatured, which means its active site will change shape and it will no longer be able to catalyze reactions effectively. This will decrease or even stop its enzymatic activity.

What is the ideal osmotic environment for an animal cell?

The ideal osmotic environment for an animal cell is isotonic, where the concentration of solutes inside the cell is the same as outside the cell. This prevents the cell from taking in too much water (bursting) or losing too much water (shriveling).

What is the habitat for decomposers?

Decomposers can be found in various habitats, including soil, leaf litter, water bodies, and even inside the bodies of dead organisms. They play a crucial role in breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients in ecosystems. Decomposers such as bacteria, fungi, and invertebrates thrive in environments rich in organic material where they can feed and decompose dead organisms.

What happens when freon is heated?

When freon is heated, it undergoes a phase change from a liquid to a gas. This change in state allows it to absorb heat from the surrounding environment, making it an effective refrigerant. Heating freon too much can cause it to decompose into potentially harmful substances.

That depends on too many variables to give a fixed answer. For example if it stays wet it decomposes fairly quickly, but if dried it does not decompose at all.

What happens if sulfuric acid is heated too high?

If sulfuric acid is heated too high, it can decompose into sulfur trioxide and water vapor. This can lead to an increase in pressure within the container, potentially causing it to explode. Additionally, there is a risk of the sulfuric acid releasing toxic sulfur dioxide gas into the environment.

Is kerosene harmful to the environment?
