Facial paralysis and paresis (loss of control of the facial muscles). In most cases, it is caused by the damage to the facial nerve (one of the cranial nerves) or central nervous system due to trauma or disease. Most commonly, this condition affects only one side of the face, e.g. Bell's Palsy. There are many other types of pareses and paralyses, most well known of which is Cerebral palsy. This is just a general overview of the meaning of this medical term.
