The cell membrane, also called the plasma membrane, is a selectively permeable membrane. The membrane is formed of a phospholipid bilayer and contains proteins that assist in cross membrane transport. The fluid mosaic model describes the way the proteins and lipids can flow along the surface of the membrane.

The fluid mosaic model represents the structure of the plasma membrane. It shows that the plasma membrane consists of a phospholipid bilayer ( with hydrophilic heads- which face the interior and exterior of the plasma membrane- and hydrophobic tails) as well as transport proteins namely carrier proteins and pore proteins. The size and polarity of a molecule determines how it will pass through the semi-permeable plasma membrane whether by simple diffusion, osmosis, facilitated diffusion or active transport.

how the cell membrane works.

The cell membrane consists in eukaryotes out of a phospholipide bilayer with integrated proteins. The model shows, that the phosopholipids aren't fixed an glide along each other. Thus also the proteins in the cell membrane change their location constantly.

The fluid mosaic model was described after scientist in the 70s watched two cell membranes hybridize. They marked one cell and after they fused both together, they saw that the cell's phospholipids had mixed completley.

The fluid mosaic model also says that there happens to be so called "flip-flops", which means a phosolipide goes upside down and the part that lay inward before is now part of the other membrane.
