The embodied mind
One example of a substance that is not part of an organism's body is water. Water is essential for life and is present in and around organisms, but it is not considered a part of an organism's body as it can be taken in and eliminated from the body.
Two organs have to work together to perform a specific function or set of functions in order to be considered part of the same body system. They should be connected physically or functionally and contribute towards the overall health and functioning of the body.

Unlike Descartes, Spinoza believed that the mind was an extension of the body, and vice versa. He thought that there was only one type of substance, a divine substance, of which the mind and body were part. As one thing, the mind and body could interact in harmony, not the discord Descartes was concerned with.
