o This section is also known as the thoracic

esophagus.

Distal esophagus

o Extends from the 10th thoracic vertebra (T10)

to the esophageal-gastric (GE) junction, which

is about at the level of the xiphoid process

o The terminus has a lower esophageal

sphincter also called the cardiac sphincte.
