Humans are mammals. Their adaptations to life are numerous. If we think of the human as an animal in the wild they are vulnerable to predators that can run faster, senses of smell, hearing and eyesight are better and reaction speed is better. They are also vulnerable to extremes of climate.

Humans

  • take care of their young for a relatively long period of time. Even after their young has reached sexual maturity, therefore, there is a high probability the offspring will survive. They also train their young or enable their young to be trained by a trusted person - teachers. This means the young do not have to rediscover everything for themselves.
  • manipulate tools to high degree to alter their environment by providing shelter and clothing to protect themselves from extremes of weather. Humans do not need to hibernate to protect themselves from cold or lack of water.
  • behave cooperatively. Scientists believe that humans have evolved to cooperate with one another in family groups, in extended family groups or tribes.
  • develop their young internally ie they do not lay eggs and leave them to hatch. They can also suckle their young with milk produced by their mother which means the infant has a better chance of survival despite externally harsh conditions.
  • are warm blooded. Therefore, they are still active in cold temperatures.
  • can manipulate objects. Sometimes called an opposable thumb, but other animals also have an opposable thumb.
  • apply intelligence to solving problems. However, cockroaches are not particularly intelligent but can survive very well.
