In fact, their walls are only one single cell thick. Veins (and their smaller contributing branches known as venules) are responsible for carrying blood from the tissues back to the heart. They have thin, non-muscular walls, and ensure that blood flows in the proper direction by using a large number of valves, which only allow the blood to flow in one direction.
