The wall of pharynx consists of 4 layers:
1. Mucosa:
Epithelium:
Nasopharynx: respiratory epithelium "pseudostratified columnar ciliated with goblet cells".
Oropharynx: oral mucosa "non keratinized stratified squamous epithelium".
Lamina propria: Dense fibrous layer rich in elastic fibers - contains mucuos glands.
Pharyngeal mucosa lacks muscularis mucosae.
2. Submucosa: loose CT
3. Muscular layer: this is composed of inner longitudinal and outer oblique striated muscle.

Inflammation of the pharynx is called as pharyngitis. inflammation of the larynx is called as laryngitis. Usually they do not come together.
The pharynx, usually found in segments 4 & 5, is used to swallow food.
The pharynx is lined with stratified squamous epithelium. This type of epithelium provides protection against mechanical stresses and abrasion due to its multiple layers of cells. It can also undergo constant renewal to replace damaged cells.
