Sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami (before also called savory) are the 5 basic taste sensation that are sensed by the taste buds in the tongue. However a great part of real taste perceptions are a combination with smell sensations from the nose. Also a certain part is psychologically determined.

What are taste pores?

Taste pores are your taste buds. These are the tiny papules on the surface of your tongue that allow you to taste things. They are technically called called gustatory organs. We have four types of taste that we can detect: salty, sweet, sour, and bitter.

If you taste all over your tongue equally why are there different types of taste buds?

Each part of your tongue has different taste buds, which react to different substances. We do not taste everything evenly on our tongues; sweet things (i.e. sugar) get tasted at the front/tip, sour things toward the back and salts and bitter flavours (bases, I think) to the sides. The middle has only a few of each.

What is the function of the taste buds?

Taste buds are responsible for detecting the different tastes of food, including sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. They contain sensory cells that send signals to the brain to interpret the flavors of the food we eat.
