Carotenoids trap the radiant solar energy and transfer it to the chlorophyll 'a' in the reaction centre. Besides this, they also act as "SHIELD PIGMENTS" as they are located over the chlorophylls thus protecting them from photo-oxidation and photo-bleaching.
