Strengths:

  • Classifies organisms in a simple way.
  • Easier to group numerous species or organisms.
  • Describes how closely related, species is to others.

Negatives:

  • If new organism can't be classified, it has to be put in a different key.
  • All organisms don't always fit in the classification keys.
  • Not as accurate when you don't know what the organisms features are.(Very different to a humans features, which can cause confusion)

  1. It is only useful when the organism that is being identified was or is a part of organisms that are part of the key. An organisms is usually misidentified if it does not belong to the key.

  2. It’s a complex mechanism of organism identification and may leads to chain of worng interpretations.

  3. The characteristics which are devised to identify an organism might not be a distinct feature of the species already exiting in the dichotomous key.

  4. Dependency on physical characteristics, does not take into account genetic characteristics

A dichotomous key is only good for sorting by using an objects physical characteristics. Also the key may have several categories that may be unimportant to anything. Ex: Has spots.
