Photosynthetic organisms are called autotrophs. They are able to produce their own food from simple inorganic compounds such as carbon dioxide. Examples of autotrophs are green plants and algae.

The two most important groups are :

  • Cyanobacteria (formerly known as blue-green algae) that provide up to 30% of the world's photosynthesis, and hence provide much of the world's oxygen supply.
  • Plankton (plants and animals) are the basis of the ocean food chain. Phytoplankton (plants) provide the food source for the zooplankton (animals) and in the process remove a large percentage of the carbon from the atmosphere (known as a carbon sink)
