The ancient world didn't really see a difference. Tribal spiritual leaders, for instance, were usually also the most knowledgeable people with respect to medicine, growing cycles, animal migrations, astronomical events, and other things that we would currently consider scientific enterprises.

Another Perspective

Religion was created gradually by the earliest humans to explain what they could not explain and to seek help from some great unknown. Science was always there but our ability to understand it developed as human brains became more sophisticated and humans discovered the "science" behind occurrences. Old mysteries began to be explained and there was no longer a need to attribute the unexplainable to some supernatural power guiding the universe. By that time religion had its foothold on the world and it has been at odds with science throughout the ages.
