"Secondary" indicates that your PV is treatable and secondary polycythemia and can go away. Isolate the reason you have polycythemia and eliminate the offending cause. Diet is a minuscule concern. If you have polycythema vera, this is a disease that is not "secondary."

If you are unsure of your diagnosis, I recommend an evaluation and treatment plan at a university level teaching hospital by a hematology department versed in seeing a large number of patients with hematological disorders and diseases. You may have been misdiagnosed. The treatment plan can be administered by your local community oncologist/hematologist.

If you are being phlebotomized, each phlebotomy removes about 250 mg of iron. The idea is to become slightly anemic and thus slow the production of red blood cells. You body can only uptake about 1-2 mg of iron per day so eat a balanced diet and don't worry not to eat iron rich foods. Over time most people require but one phlebotomy every two months or so.
