I think cold temperature causes the muscle tissue in the face area to contract and when you go to yawn for example, the muscle tissue is forced to expand too quickly, causing cramp to occur. In other words, cramp is a result of over stressing the muscle tissue. I've often had cramp on very cold days in my lower chin area and it can be very painful for a few minutes.
