Submandibular absess can be cause by Salmonella. Salmonella species represent uncommon causative agents in focal infections of the head and neck. An immunocompromised condition can be a critical predisposing factor for Salmonella submandibular abscess.

They can also be caused by a deep tooth absess running down through the mandibal, earning it the name, "sub-mandibular".

In either case, the infection can be quite painful, and very serious if left untreated. The absess needs to be drained and treated with antibiotics.
