Best Answer

Some cells exit the cell cycle between interphase and division and enter an non-dividing phase called GO. The process that causes cell specialization is called differentiation and occurs when the cell selectively activates or inactivates specific genes. Specialized cells differ in structure and function.

Specialisation occurs during the development of a young cell when a specific gene causes it to build up different features for a particular function. For instance how red blood cells are made to carry oxygen aroudn the body or nerves are specially made for speed to send messages to the brain.

Expression of different genes in different cells makes cells specialized.

Each cell nucleus contains identical DNA, but different mechanisms (for example chemical messengers) decides which genes are expressed in the cell. The genes are the template for m-RNA (messenger-RNA) transcript which then leads to synthesis of proteins. Different proteins in different cells results in different functions of the cell itself.

Cells begin with a zygote (fertilized egg) and this begins to produce cells that will later on be muscle cells, nerve cells, skin cells and many more by the time the individual is complete.
