Because children have more bones than adults. They is because the bones fuse together when the children are growing. A baby has 300 bones at birth. But because bones fuse together during the "growth period", adults have less bones and they end up with 206 bones.

In the case of the fontanelle, or soft spot, the bones in the skull are not fully developed when the infant is born to enable it to be able to pass through the birth canal more easily. After birth the bone needs to fuse together in order to protect the brain. This process is called intramembranous ossification. During this process the connective tissues are replaced by calcuim salts forming bone.

The skull. When a baby is born, the skull is not fused or it would not fit the birth canal. The plates in the skull over lap to make the transition of the birth, and when babies are born, very seldom do you have a perfectly shaped head. It's changes can take from a few hours, to a couple days, or longer due to other complications not listed.

No,just 206 bones in an adult human, but the value can vary in an infant even over 300 cause the bones are in the process of being formed. This is quite contradictory to the fact that an infant is born with cartilage at its birth because cartilage is more flexible, thereby preventing the baby being crushed at the time of birth!
