∙ 13y agoIn the case of the fontanelle, or soft spot, the bones in the skull are not fully developed when the infant is born to enable it to be able to pass through the birth canal more easily. After birth the bone needs to fuse together in order to protect the brain. This process is called intramembranous ossification. During this process the connective tissues are replaced by calcuim salts forming bone.

The plates in the skull over lap to make the transition of the birth, and when babies are born, very seldom do you have a perfectly shaped head. It's changes can take from a few hours, to a couple days, or longer due to other complications not listed.
