Mostly it has gotten smaller and smaller with improvements in technology (e.g. the ones AT&T introduced in the 1970s could only be installed in cars and filled much of the trunk, the ones Motorola introduced in the same time period were actually handheld portable but still were the size of a brick and weighed almost as much, modern ones are as small as 3 inches by 1.5 inches by 0.25 inches).

Another thing is the addition of many convenience features in the phones that have nothing to do with their primary function as telephones.

The biggest change is this: the original cellphones transmitted and received an analog signal. Current cellphones transmit and receive digitized streams.

The conversion did three important things.

First, the number of services the phone could offer dramatically increased. A voice-grade 4-kilohertz channel is useful for one thing: carrying voice. You couldn't text on an analog phone, or watch videos, send photos, listen to music or do any of the other things someone with a smartphone takes for granted. You could just make phone calls.

Next, it made cell service cheaper. In the days of analog cell, you had to pay for every minute you talked on the phone - and unlike the wireline days when you only paid if you initiated a toll call (one that was outside your local exchange...if my phone number was 762-1234, Mary's was 762-3456 and Judy's was 868-5678, I would have to pay for the call if I wanted to talk to Judy but not if I wanted to talk to Mary because the phone system would have to route the call from my exchange to Judy's) you paid whether you dialed the call or answered it. Worse, you paid no matter how short the transmission was - if Mary and I were to climb the hill the cell tower was on, plunk our tails down on the ground and dial each other's phones...we'd still have to pay.

It also increased the number of people who could use the system at one time. An analog cell tower could only process a certain number of calls at once. A digital tower probably also has that limitation, but it can handle more callers and there are now more towers.

When cellphones first came out, the only people who had them were executives and traveling salesmen. Now everyone has one. And it's all thanks to digital technology.
