That is a long an involved answer.Basically people believed in unbalance humers, I don't know what that means and neither did they.Then a guy I think his name was Schmilweiss came along and saw that more babies survived birth with a woman nurse than a man doctor.He found that the woman actually washed their hands whereas the men would wipe their butt and care less.He came up with "germ theory" that there were little animucules (that's what they called them) causing the deaths.They laffed and laffed and laffed at him till he went bonkers and wound up going crazy.It was known at the time that if you had cowpox which was not fatal and gave it to someone else you did not get smallpox or if you did you did not die.A vaccination of a sort.Check the link under the related links section for a good article on the whole thing.
