Diseases affect either the structure and/or functioning of an organ within the organism. If the cells can, they try to repair the structures, which improves the functioning. However, some diseases are too chronic or too ongoing for the cells to completely correct. So the organ or its supportive / related structures or other organs try to "go around" the problems. For examples:

  1. A blood vessel might fill with debris blocking blood flow (which is the disease). Blood vessels try to re-route around the affected area.
  2. When one kidney has a problem, the other kidney will try to do the work of both kidneys.
  3. Etc.

But the body cannot compensate for some diseases, or cannot continue to compensate. Organs may be too diseased; the organ may fail, or stop working.
