Enzymes are absolutely critical in normal biological function. Living organisms would not be able to produce the energy or build the structures necessary for life without the accelerated chemistry that enzymes provide.

Speed up chemical reactions within a cell. Enzymes act as catalysts in chemical reactions in cells. They are not used up themselves or altered in doing so.

They are used in digestion to break down large, insoluble food molecules, into smaller, water-soluble molecules.

Enzymes support reactions involving energy transfer.

Enzymes have uses in industry including:

  • break down stains on clothing into soluble substances.
  • increase the amount of juice released from fruit.

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy. Organisms go through hundreds and hundreds of chemical reactions per second (thousands even) and the fact that catalysts lower the activation energy for each one of these reactions is a great advantage, as it increases the efficiency of the organism.
