Under a microscope the red blood cell looks a bit like a flat football with a bunch of different size and shape lollypops sticking out of it.
Imagine the A antigen as one shape of lollypop and the B antigen is another shape.
If your red cells have the A antigen then you are group A.
If your red cells have the B antigen then you are group B.
If they have both you are AB.
If they have neither you are group O.
The + or - corresponds to the D antigen, which is just another shape of lollypop. If you have it you are + if not you are -.
So if you have the A antigen and the D antigen you are A+.
If you have neither A or B but you do have D, you are O+.
If you have B but not A or D then you are B-.
There are hundreds of different antigens on the surface of red blood cells but A, B and D are the most important as far as blood grouping is concerened.

With regards to Blood Plasma however, AB can donate to any group, including O.
