∙ 12y agoThe autonomic system controls responses that are involuntary, such as maintaining breathing or keeping your heart at a steady rate. It consists of parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions. Parasympathetic is for 'rest and digestion' and symapthetic is for 'fight or flight' In short sympathetic speeds up body reactions but slows digestion and parasympathetic slows body reactions and assists and controls digestion. In reality both systems will function in conjunction with each other to bring about normal body states.
The nervous system is broken into the central and autonomic nervous systems. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. The autonomic nervous system contains the peripheral nerves.
CNS is brain and spinal cord. PNS are the sensory and motor neurons. The PNS breaks down further into the autonomic and the sensory-somatic nervous system The autonomic breaks down further into the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.
Your sweat glands are controlled by autonomic nervous system. They get the nervous supply through the sympathetic nerves. But functionally they are parasympathetic nerves, because the acetylcholine is secreted over there at the terminal end.
The involuntary nervous system that is involved with organ regulation is called the Autonomic nervous system (ANS) and is comprised of the Sympathetic nervous system and the Parasympathetic nervous system.
