In lasik (laser eye) surgery (an awesome alternative to wearing contact lenses or glasses and treatment of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatisms), the corneal tissue (transparent part of the eye that covers Pupil and Iris) is sliced thinly and made into a flap. This allows the ophthalmologist to then correct the cornea underneath (depending on your specifications). The last step is to then reconnect the corneal tissue flap. I've had it done- it only takes about 10-15 minutes.

More information on steps:

1) Creating corneal flap: A suction ring element is used to hold the eye in place. During this time you will appear to be "blind". This may cause small blood vessels to break inside the white part of your eye (sclera). This is harmless and will go away within a few weeks. After suction a laser is used to create a very thin flap. This is an alternative to a blade (that used to be used). Not all candidates qualify for lasik, as it depends on eye pressure and cornea thickness.

2) Adjusting cornea: Your ophthalmologist then uses an Excimer laser to correct your cornea. This is the longest part of the process. 5-8 Minutes. You may smell something burning or something along those lines. This is normal. It's just the laser. Your Doctor will explain it all.

3) Repositioning flap: Your corneal flap will be repositioned and smoothed to remove any air bubbles. Lubricant may be used (if you're not tearing up). The corneal flap will adhere naturally.

The whole process shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. Recovery is less than a week. It's one of the best procedures out there. Simple, fast, effective and very very safe.
