Transmission requires close, frequent and/or prolonged exposures.

These particles are very small and may "float" on air currents for long periods of time. Infection occurs when these particles are inhaled into the lungs, where it settles and begins to grow. It can travel later to most of the body.

Sign and symptoms:

  • A cough lasting 3 or more weeks (may produce discolored or bloody sputum)
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Slight fever
  • Night sweats
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain with breathing or coughing (pleurisy)
First-line therapy drugs: rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrizinamide and ethambutol.

It is VERY important to finish the course of the medication (often taking from 6-9 months) or you can become sick again.

TB bacterium can become resistant to the medication, making it ineffective and producing an increased Risk for the development of MDR-TB, which happens when the bacterium resists eradication with more than one drug. Prevention: BCG vaccination (Bacille Calmette-Guerin)

Not recommended for use in the U.S. but very effective in countries with a high risk of infection, giving the receiver between 50-80% resistance to TB in some cases.
