Neuroanatomy is the study of the anatomy and organization of the nervous system. In contrast to animals with radial symmetry, whose nervous system consists of a distributed network of cells, animals with bilateral symmetry have segregated, defined nervous systems, and thus we can begin to speak of their neuroanatomy. In vertebrates, both the internal structure of the brain and spinal cord (together called the central nervous system, or CNS) and the routes of the nerves that connect to the rest of the body (known as the peripheral nervous system, or PNS) are extremely elaborate. The delineation of distinct structures and regions of the nervous system has been critical in investigating how it works. For example, much of what neuroscientists have learned comes from observing how damage or "lesions" to specific brain areas affects behavior or other neural functions.

How much money does a neuroanatomist earn?

The salary of a neuroanatomist can vary depending on factors such as experience, location, and employer. On average, a neuroanatomist in the United States can make between $60,000 to $120,000 per year. Advanced degrees and specialized expertise can also impact salary potential.

How much schooling does a Neuroanatomist need?

A neuroanatomist typically requires extensive education, including a bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as biology or neuroscience, followed by a Ph.D. in neuroscience, neuroanatomy, or a related discipline. This process can take about 8-10 years of higher education after high school. Some may also pursue postdoctoral research to gain additional expertise in the field. Overall, a strong foundation in both biology and advanced research methods is essential for a career in neuroanatomy.

How do you pronounce Papez from the diagram Papez circuit in the brain?

Papez is pronounced "PAH-pez", with the emphasis on the first syllable. It is named after the Hungarian neuroanatomist James W. Papez.

Name three career paths a neuroscientist can take?

There are many career paths that neuroscientists can take: Neuroanatomist studies the structure (anatomy) of the nervous system Neurobiologist studies the biology of the nervous system Neurochemist studies the chemistry (for example, neurotransmitters) of the nervous system Neurological Surgeon a physician who performs surgery on the nervous system Neurologist a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system Neuropathologist studies diseases of the nervous system Neuropharmacologist studies the action of drugs on the nervous system and/or behavior Neuropsychologist studies brain-behavior relationships (especially cognitive functions) in humans Neurophysiologist studies the physiology of the nervous system. Physiological Psychologist (Psychobiologist or Biological Psychologist) studies the neural basis of behavior Psychiatrist a physician who diagnoses and treats mental disorders Psychophysicist studies the relationships between environmental stimuli (for example, light, sound, or heat) and the resulting sensations and perceptions that they produce

What is the function of dendritic spines?

Dendritic spines are micron-sized protuberances of neuronal membrane that receive and initially process most of the excitatory signals transmitted in the brain. Since first described by the great neuroanatomist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, over a century ago, dendritic spines have been a popular source of conjecture in the field of neuroscience. Many hypotheses have been offered to explain their function, from increasing the surface area available for synaptic contacts, to controlling the intracellular diffusion of signaling molecules, to providing a means for neurons to connect with their neighbors in the densely-packed environment of the brain. Perhaps the best-supported of these hypotheses is that dendritic spines enable learning and memory through the discrete, local management of synaptic input. Each dendritic spine contains a special complement of proteins which not only transduce synaptic signals, but which adapt to signal activity and determine synaptic efficacy. These adaptations can affect the expression or function of neurotransmitter receptors, the localization of signaling proteins within the dendritic spine, even the dendritic spine size and shape. In turn, these changes can affect the sensitivity of the dendritic spine to subsequent synaptic signals and so are believed to be an important means of recording memories in the brain.

Who is Sunita Williams?

Sunita Williams (born September 19, 1965 in Euclid, Ohio) is a United States Naval officer and a NASA astronaut. She was assigned to the International Space Station as a member of Expedition 14 and then joined Expedition 15. Williams is the second woman of Indian heritage to have been selected by NASA for a space mission after Kalpana Chawla and the second astronaut of Slovenian heritage after Ronald M. Sega. She holds three records for female space travelers: longest spaceflight (195 days), number of space walks (four), and total time spent on spacewalks (29 hours and 17 minutes). She is married to Michael J. Williams, she is Indian-Slovenian American and has a pet Jack Russell Terrier named Gorby. Her recreational interests include running, swimming, biking, triathlons, windsurfing, snowboarding and bow hunting. She is an avid Boston Red Sox fan. Her parents are Deepak Pandya and Bonnie Pandya, who reside in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Dr. Deepak Pandya is a famous neuroanatomist. Williams' roots on her father's side go back to Gujarat in India and she has been to India to visit her father's family. She is of Slovenian descent from her mother's side. Among the personal items Williams took with her to the International Space Station (ISS) are a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, a small figurine of Ganesha and some samosas. After launching aboard Discovery, Williams arranged to donate her pony tail to Locks of Love. The haircut by fellow astronaut Joan Higginbotham occurred aboard the International Space Station and the ponytail was brought back to earth with the STS-116 crew. In early March 2007 she received a tube of wasabi in a Progress spacecraft resupply mission in response to her request for more spicy food. Opening the tube, which was packaged at one atmospheric pressure, the gel-like paste was forced out in the lower-pressure of the ISS. In the free-fall environment, the spicy geyser was difficult to contain. On April 16, 2007, she ran the first marathon by an astronaut in orbit. Williams finished the Boston Marathon in four hours and 24 minutes . The other crew members reportedly cheered her on and gave her oranges during the race. Williams' sister, Dina Pandya, and fellow astronaut Karen L. Nyberg ran the marathon on Earth, and Williams received updates on their progress from Mission Control. Like many of the other astronauts and cosmonauts she is a licensed amateur radio operator having passed the technician class license exam in 2001 and was issued the call sign KD5PLB by the Federal Communications Commission on 13 Aug 2001.
