In this sort of outbreak, many people will become infected and, if the disease is potent enough, many of them will die. Of course there is bound to be a handful of individuals who are naturally immune to the epidemic if the nation has a diversified populous, such as America. If this were to occur in a third world country that does not have resources to combat the disease or possess a very multicultural population, mass death is sure to take place. However, if the disease arose in a better developed nation, a cure or preventive medication could be invented much quicker and likely halt the spread of the disease early on.
