Metaphase
During prophase of the cell cycle, the DNA condenses and coils tightly to form visible chromosomes. This process helps to organize and prepare the DNA for cell division.
Prophase 1 vs Prophase 2 of meiosisDURING PROPHASE I:Crossing over happens in chromosomes where genetic information is swapped from chromosome to another at a chiasma (chiasmata for multiple crossing over sections)Cell is Diploid 46 chromosomesDURING PROPHASE II:No Crossing over at this point, as it has already happened during prophase I.Cell is Haploid 23 chromosomes

The phase that happens only once in meiosis is prophase I, which is characterized by the pairing of homologous chromosomes and the exchange of genetic material through crossing over. This phase is unique to meiosis and does not occur in mitosis.
The first stage of mitosis when chromosomes start becoming visible in the microscope is called prophase.
During mitosis, chromosomes are in their most condensed form during metaphase

In prophase chromatin condenses, spindle fibers form a bridge from one end of the cell to another, and the nuclear membrane starts to break down.
In prophase I of meiosis, chromosomes can be seen under an optical microscope. The chromosomes appear shorter and thicker. Meiotic division happens in two stages.
The pairing up of maternal and paternal chromosomes during meiosis happens in the prophase I stage. This pairing is called synapsis and results in the formation of a structure called a tetrad.
