It's actually called "OSGOOD SLAUGHTER DISEASE" .

It happens to young people usually during growth spurts.

Essentially it is a pulling away or tearing away of the Tibular Tuberosity, the attachment site for the quadriceps, and it usually happens because the individuals growth rate is so fast that the bone length development doesn't keep up, therefore you get excessive tension on the attachment site (the patella tendon) and it starts to pull away.
