WSA stands for Wilderness Study Area. The term is employed by the US government agency, The Bureau of Land Management.
A Wilderness Study Area is an administrative designation designed to allow these areas to be studied and considered by Congress for possible designation as wilderness.
Once land is designated as wilderness under the Wilderness Act, the US government then takes certain prescribed measures to protect the area from development or other human activities.
