As a vet I see this process a few times a year. It is extremely rare but can affect 1 in every two million dogs. It is caused by a parasite that severs the nervous system which cuts off the natural blood flow and creates an almost gang green effect to the dogs legs. This eventually causes them to simply fall off leaving four bloody stumps that can get infected very easily if this happens to your dog consult your vet immediately!
