Petri dishes are used to culture cells in research settings. They usually contain a solidified agarose gel containing nutrients on, or in which unicellular organisms can grow, or they may be used to hold liquid medium in which single cells of multicellular organisms can be cultured. Sometimes the gel can be missing some nutrients or containing antibiotics for selective culturing. They are ubiquitous in any sort of research environment where large quantities of cells (regardless of type) are needed.
