meiosis is a type of cell division wherein

there are four sister chromosomes that will be formed. Just like mitosis,,the function of this cell division is to replace old cells in the body to sustain and for the life of the specie of a certain life form to survive.

The biological functions of meiosis include generating by recombination and sexual reproduction. The second is that the recombination at meiosis plays a role in repairing genetic defects. Third, it is essential for the reprogramming of gametes in animals, and fourth, it helps maintain the immortality of the germ line.

Meiosis facilitates stable sexual reproduction. Without the halving of ploidy, or chromosome count, fertilization would result in zygotes that have twice the number of chromosomes as the zygotes from the previous generation. Successive generations would have an exponential increase in chromosome count. In organisms that are normally diploid, polyploidy, the state of having three or more sets of chromosomes, results in developmental abnormalities or lethality [4]. Polyploidy is poorly tolerated in most animal species. Plants, however, regularly produce fertile, viable polyploids. Polyploidy has been implicated as an important mechanism in plant speciation.

Most importantly, recombination and independent assortment of homologous chromsomes allow for a greater diversity of genotypes in the population. This produces genetic variation in gametes that promote genetic and phenotypic variation in a population of offspring.

What are the functions of meiosis but not mitosis in eukaryotes?

The form of cell division that produces animal gametes is meiosis, not mitosis. The production of gametes in plants is a function of both mitosis and meiosis.

mitosis, the cells split, it's more complicated than that though, check an article on cells

What kind of cell does meiosis function in the formation of?

Meiosis functions to create gametes, or sex-cells. These are the cells that are involved in sexual reproduction.

Does mitosis occur in the ovaries and testes?

No. Meiosis occurs in the ovaries and testes. Meiosis is the process that deals with gametes (sex cells)

What are the main functions of meiosis?

The main function of meiosis is to produce gametes, which are the egg and sperm cells. These cells have half of the number of chromosomes that are in a normal body cells.
