Algae are photosynthetic organisms spread across two domains and a couple kingdoms. Cyanobacteria are within the domain Eubacteria. Most other algae are in the protist kingdom, long recognized as a trash can taxon. (A trash can taxon is a taxonomic group that contains organisms that cannot be placed elsewhere; in other words, scientists didn't know how to categorize them, so they lumped them into one group.) However, there is a move to place the green algae and the red alage with the land plants, since they share a common ancestor.

Fungi, on the other hand, have their own kingdom. There are some fungus-like organisms within the protist kingdom, such as the oomycetes and the slime molds. All of them are heterotrophic, meaning they rely on other organisms for food. Most are saprobes, which means they decompose dead organic matter. However, many are pathogens and parasites.

What are some symbiotic relationships in the tundra biome?

One symbiotic relationship in the tundra is the one between the alga and the fungus. This relationship is known as lichen. The alga is protected by the fungus and the fungus receives food from the alga.

What is a combination of a fungus in a alga that grow together?

It is an example of a symbiotic relationship.

What is a common autotrophic component of a lichen?

Lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and algae. The algae are the autotrophic component of this partnership. Green algae and cyanobacterium are types of algae commonly found in lichen.

What is the symbiotic relationship in lichen?

some organisms live together and share shelter and nutrients, this is called symbiotic relationship. in organisms like lichens a chlorophyll- containing partner which is an alga, and a fungus live together. the fungus provides shelter, water and minerals to the alga while in return the alga provides food which it prepares by the process of photosynthesis.

What phylum do lichens belong to?

Lichens do not belong to a specific phylum. They are a symbiotic association between a fungus and an alga or a cyanobacterium. The fungus belongs to the phylum Ascomycota, while the alga or cyanobacterium can belong to various phyla.

Which are 2 symbiotic relationship of wetlands?

Two symbiotic relationships in wetlands are the relationship between the Egyptian Plover and the American Alligator. Another relationship is alga living off of lichens.

Is a lichen made up of a fungus and a fungus like protist that live together?

No, a lichen is actually made up of a fungus and an alga or cyanobacterium that live together in a mutualistic symbiotic relationship. The fungus provides a protected environment and absorbs nutrients, while the alga or cyanobacterium photosynthesizes to produce food for both partners.

Lichen is a symbiotic associated between what two things?

A lichen species is a mixture of one species of fungus and one species of alga so that both species together work as a single organism. Usually the fungus gives the lichen its shape and the alga cells lie spread between the thread-like fungus cells. The alga produce carbohydrates and other organic molecules for both itself and the fungus by means of photosyntesis. The fungus furnishes minerals, humidity and protection for the alga, and exposes the alga for the sun. Both species have usually capability also to grow alone. A lichen multiply usually by buddings that brake off and establishes itself as a new individual.

What is common autotrophic component of lichen?

What are the characteristics of lichens?

A lichen is a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga. The algal partner photosynthesizes to provide food for the fungus, and the fungus in turn provides protection for the alga.

What is a lichen made out of?
