DNA is a genetic code found inside the nucleus of every cell in every living creature and is unique to every person. A fingerprint is also unique to each person, but is not genetic coding, it is a pattern of ups and downs on your skin.

Fingerprinting is identification of any DNA sequence b using different lab techniques e.g RAPD,SSR,AFLP,s, etc While Footprinting is a method for determining the exact DNA sequence to which a particular DNA-binding protein binds. Examples:

  • hormone-receptor complexes that bind to their hormone response elements
  • transcription factors that bind eukaryotic operators, enhancers, and silencers
  • the lac repressor that shuts down the lac operon in E. coli

DNA fingerprinting is a way to identify individuals DNA. It is what forensic scientists use to figure out whose DNA is found at a crime scene or whatever. Each person has their own unique "fingerprint" except maybe in the case of identical twins.

DNA or "DNASE" footprinting is different. It is a technique used by researchers to see where a protein binds a piece of DNA. The DNA with the protein attatched is isolated, and digested with varying amounts of DNASE (an enzyme that cuts DNA). You then run the DNA out on a gel and find where the DNASE was not able to cut. Wherever it was not able to cut is where the protein was bound and on a gel it resembles a "footprint"

A DNA fingerprint is the unique identification in a person's DNA sequence. This "fingerprint" so to speak can be used in cases such as criminal cases to identify a suspect of a crime.

A fingerprint found on the tip of the fingers is caused in the mother's womb when the baby gently presses its hands on the inside walls. This fingerprint is also used to identify an individual because everyone has a different pattern or set of fingerprints. It can be used in a criminal case as well to accuse a suspect of a crime.

Officials use DNA in fingerprinting because everyone has a unique set of DNA, which therefore codes for a unique set of fingerprints (unless they are identical twins). This means officials can track down criminals because no two sets of fingerprints are alike.

A fingerprint is just a pattern on your finger, unique for each human. A DNA fingerprint is a combination of little pieces of your DNA that change very rapidly between generations, called microsatellites. They change much faster than the rest of the DNA, so everyone really has unique versions of them. They can be used to pinpoint individuals just like actual finger fingerprints.
