A cell is defined as a structural and functional unit of an organism because it is the smallest thing that has the attributes we consider important for life.

The only smaller construction which could perhaps be considered "alive" would be a virus. However, this is controversial, since there is no universally agreed definition of what it means for something to be alive.

Why is ATP important for cellular respiration?

Cellular respiration is the production of ATP but, you must use ATP to have cellular respiration. During cellular respiration you use 2 ATP molecules and can make a small amount of ATP (with out oxygen) or you can make a larger amount (with oxygen)

What is the process by which plants release energy in food to carry on life processes?

Plants release energy from food through a process called cellular respiration. During cellular respiration, glucose is broken down into energy in the form of ATP through a series of chemical reactions. This energy is then used by the plant to carry out various life processes necessary for growth and survival.

Who said that protoplasm is the physical basis of life?
