The neurocranium and viscerocranium both refer to parts of the skull.

The neurocranium is the part of the skull that surrounds that brain. It consists of the following bones:

  • frontal
  • ethmoid
  • sphenoid
  • occipital
  • 2 parietal
  • 2 temporal

The viscerocranium is the rest of the skull, the parts not directly covering the brain. It consists of: 2 of each of the following bones:

  • zygomatic
  • palatine
  • nasal
  • maxilla
  • lacrimal
  • inferior nasal conchae

1 of each of the following bones:

  • mandible
  • vomer
