Single-cell organisms, also called protists (because they are placed in the kingdom Protozoa) contain all the devices necessary for life in a single cell. This would include devices for ingesting food, moving from place to place (in those that are motile), and eliminating waste, and possibly even defence mechanisms. The one cell of these organisms is not dependent on any other cell to survive.

Human cells, on the other hand, each perform specific functions, are not self contained, and rely completely on the entire system, or a good part of it, for survival. A single human cell, removed from the body will not survive long.

The cells of a multicellular organism are usually specialized for different jobs. For instance, the human body contains nerve cells, bone cells, muscle cells and many more. A single celled organism has to do everything in one cell, so each tends to be like all the others.
