Diffusion refers to the passive movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. Diffusion of water across a (semi) permeable membrane is called osmosis.

For instance, you have two glasses of water with a tube connecting the two glasses at the bottom. In that tube is a screen.

If you add some salt (NaCl) to glass #1, water will pass through the tube from glass #2 until the concentration of salt water is equal in both glasses. NaCl is too big to pass through the screen (selectively permeable membrane) so water does the equalizing.

This is an analogy so dont bother cutting holes in all of your glasses to see the reaction.

What is the net diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane?

Net diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane is known as osmosis. In osmosis, water moves from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration in order to equalize the solute concentrations on both sides of the membrane.

What process - movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low concentration?

Osmosis is the process by which water moves across a selectively permeable membrane.

What is the diffusion of water through the cell membrane is called?

The diffusion of water through the cell membrane is called osmosis. Osmosis occurs when water molecules move across a semi-permeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration in order to equalize the concentration on both sides of the membrane.

Osmosis is the process by which molecules tend to move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration is this true or false?

True. Osmosis is the movement of solvent molecules (usually water) across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration to equalize the concentration on both sides of the membrane.

What is osmisis?

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration. This process helps to balance the concentration of solutes on both sides of the membrane. It is important for maintaining the water balance in biological systems.

Diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane?

it is osmosis

Is it true if the process by which water moves across a selectively permeable membrane is called diffusion?

Diffusion is a physical process. When it is performed through a selectively permeable membrane, it is called osmosis. Thus osmosis is an appropriate word for movement of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane and not diffusion.

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane through aquaporins is called?

osmosis

What involves the movement of solutes across a selectively permeable membrane by the process of difussion?

Osmosis involves the movement of solutes across a selectively permeable membrane by the process of diffusion. In osmosis, water molecules move across the membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration in order to equalize the concentration on both sides of the membrane.

What includes diffusion osmosis and facilitated diffusion?

These processes involve the movement of molecules across a semi-permeable membrane. Diffusion is the passive movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane. Facilitated diffusion is the passive transport of molecules across a membrane with the help of specific proteins.

What is osmosis the diffusion of?

water

What are all the passive transport in a cell?

There are two types of passive transport in a cell:Diffusion - the substance moves down a concentration gradient across a partialy permeable membrane. This requires no energy.Osmosis - WATER moves down a water potential across a partially permeable membrane. This requites no energy.

What materials does osmosis transport?

Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane from where it(water) is in higher concentration to where it(water) is in lower concentration.

What process - movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low concentration?

Osmosis is the process by which water moves across a selectively permeable membrane.

What is the diffusion of water across the selectively permeable?

osmosis

Why is diffusion of water vapour not an example of osmosis?

Osmosis is the movement of water molecules but water must also be in the liquid state and move across a semi-permeable membrane. Water as water vapour acts like a gas so this cannot be called osmosis.
