Cartilage has a number of purposes around the body. Cartilage is present in joints in various forms:

Fibrocartilage: found in the sutures of the skull where it joins the bony plates together.

Hyaline cartilage: found on the articulating surfaces of bones, where it provides lubrication for joints to enable ease of motion. This form of cartilage also forms the fetal skeleton before it becomes proper bone via the process of ossification.

Elastic cartilage: Found in the earlobes and the suspensory ligament of the penis. This cartilage can stretch and regain it's original shape and length without sustaining damage.
