Carotid arteries supply blood to brain .

Blood is supplied to the entire brain by 2 pairs of arteries: the internal carotid arteries and vertebral arteries. The right and left vertebral arteries come together at the base of the brain to form a single basilar artery. The basilar artery joins the blood supply of the internal carotid arteries in a ring at the base of the brain. This ring of arteries is called the circle of Willis. The circle of Willis provides a safety mechanism...if one of the arteries gets blocked, the "circle" will still provide the brain with blood.

The right and left common carotid arteries and the right and left vertebral arteries. The right and left common carotid arteries branch off from the common carotid arteries which also form 2 additional external arteries (supplying the face etc). The brain is also supplied by the right and left vertebral arteries.

In humans, (and most other animals) the majority of the blood supplied to the brain comes from the internal and external carotid arteries and the vertebral ateries.

Blood is pumped out of the heart into the aorta. The left common carotid artery branches off the aorta, as does the brachiocephalic artery. The right common carotid artery branches off the brachiocephalic artery. The common carotid arteries then become the internal and external carotid arteries which are the main sources of oxygenated blood to the brain.

The left subclavian artery also branches off the aorta and the right subclavian artery branches off the brachiocephalic artery. The vertebral arteries branch off of these.

What are the mechanisms by which strokes occur?

The blockage of an artery in the brain by a clot (thrombosis) is the most common cause of a stroke. The part of the brain that is supplied by the clotted blood vessel is then deprived of blood and oxygen. As a result of the deprived blood and oxygen, the cells of that part of the brain die. Typically, a clot forms in a small blood vessel within the brain that has been previously narrowed due to a variety of risk factors including:high blood pressure (hypertension),high cholesterol, diabetes, andsmoking.ashna and sienna roxIt could also be caused by a hole in the heart which is called a PFO. Then a blood clot can go through the hole and up to the brain. I would know. It happened to me.
