In theory a life form gets half its genetic material from each of its parents. In an ideal situation the genes are passed exactly. But life is so diverse that occasionally a gene is altered in the transmission from parent to offspring.

That alteration can be of no effect, of harmful effect or of beneficial effect

harmful here means that it damages the offspring's abhility to survive in its environment and reproduce.

beneficial here means that it enhances the offspring's ability to survive in its environment and reproduce.

In general, only the harmless or beneficial genes will be transmitted by the offspring to its offspring - a changed gene will not change back to the 'correct' form.

By constant alteration (mutation) of genes one life form can - within a few thousand generations - produce many variations, and even new species which can be unable to breed with each other.

Alternatively, a life-form can have variations within its 'family' that make some of the members better suited to the environment in which they find themselves..... Darwin's famous example was the variation in the beaks of the finches on the different islands of the Galapagos, each more suited to the type of food available.
