The cells that are thought to enable myelination to take place are called Glial Cells, which wrap themselves around the axions in a spiral fashion. This creates a sheath, or insulation, around the axion. It is often referred to as 'White Matter'.

∙ 10y agoThese cells are called Schwann cells. They lay down the myelin so that the axon is not short circuited and the space between the cells (Nodes of Ranvier) allow for very rapid movement as the action potential "jumps" from one node to the next.
