The leaves and stems of lilly pads that are submerged are flexible, so that they can move with the underwater currents. They also have air spaces in their stems to support them when under water. Lilly pads lack a strong water transport system; instead water and nutrients are absorbed directly through the leaves. The roots are reduced or not even there, because the roots are only needed to anchor the plant in the water. The seeds lilly pads produce can float and the chlorophyll is only on the top of the leaves.
