The mitochondrion (pl. mitochondria), found in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells, is nicknamed the "powerhouse of the cell".

The mitochondrion contains the enzymes and complexes of the electron transport chain. Passage of a proton along the electron transport chain catalyses the synthesis of ATP(adenosine triphosphate), which is the "energy currency" of the cell.

Cells which are physiologically more active, such as muscle cells, contain more mitochondria, compared to metabolically inactive cells.
