Since gametes divide by a special process, meiosis, they will always have half the number of chromosomes as regular body cells. This is because the chromosomes only copy themselves once, however they are split apart twice. Think of it as a math problem.

If the original cell count is, for example, 2 chromosomes, and each chromosome makes a copy of itself, the cell will have 4 chromosomes. During meiosis 1, the cell divides, and the chromosomes split, resulting in each daughter cell having 2 chromosomes, the same as the original. However, in meiosis 2, they divide again without making another copy of themselves, so that by the time meiosis is done, each one of the 4 cells that results have 1 chromosome, half the number of the original cell.

2x2=4

4/2=2

2/2=1

Meiosis. Meiosis is the process in which gametes are produced. In meiosis, 4 haploid (think haploid- half) daughter cells are produced from the parent cell. These cells have half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. For example, normal human cells have 46 chromosomes, where gametes have only 23.

Yes, gametes have a haploid(n) number of chromosomes and body (somatic) cells have a diploid (2n) number of chromosomes.

For example in humans our somatic cells have 46 chromosomes. However, the gametes( sperm or egg) of humans have 23 chromosomes

Gametes have gone meiosis, this kind of cell division halves the number of chromosomes. This is accomplished by diving the cell twice without replicating the DNA a second time.

What is the process of making gametes called?

Male gametes* --->Meiosis. (basic pre-biology in most all biology books)

What is gamete fusion?

It is the process during the formation of a zygote when two gametes, each carrying a different set of chromosomes, fuse together. This ensures that the developing zygote has a set of chromosomes from each parent and the cells can divide properly. The fusion of gametes is called sexual reproduction. There must be two gametes present for sexual reproduction to occur and they must have to correct number of chromosomes.

What process are gametes produced through?

The Nuclear process that Gametes are formed is called Gametogenesis.

When a cell divides and produces two cell with half the number of chromosomes?

The process is called meiosis. And those two cells are sex cells aka gametes.

What is it called when homologous chromosomes fail to separate properly causing to the gametes to have too many or too few chromosomes?

Complicated.

Why do gametes have n numbers of chromosomes but not 2n?

Gametes are produced by the type of cell division called meiosis. During meiosis the number of chromosomes are halved. So if a cell starts off with 2n chromosomes and divides by meiosis the new cells will end up with n chromosomes.

Why is this important each of the haploid sex cells has only half the number of chromosomes as the original diploi d cell?

Gametes (or sex cells) are haploid in nature. This means they have half the number of chromosomes present in a regular body cell (or somatic cell). The male and female gametes unite in a process called fertilization to give rise to the offspring. Since both the male and female gametes have haploid number of chromosomes, the final offspring will end up having the diploid number of chromosomes.

What Process results in the formation of gametes?

Gametes are produced by a type of cell division called meiosis. Meiosis results in four daughter cells each with half the number of chromosomes of the parent cell.

What is the meaning of a haploid?

Cells with a full set of chromosomes are Diploids. Cells that contain unpaired chromosomes contain half the set of chromosomes and are called Haploids. Gametes are reproductive cells (sperm and eggs) that are haploids which are produced by the process meiosis.
