First the term "kingdom" when used in terms of classification means something specific.

A kingdom is a very high level classification as in the 'animal' kingdom, the 'plant' kingdom etc.

As the maple is a plant it is part of the plant kingdom but is not a kingdom in its own rite.

Order: Sapindales

Family: Sapindaceae or Aceraceae

Subfamily: Hippocastanoideae

Genus: Acer

Then comes the various Maple species.
